Maine voters will decide on marriage equality
More than two years after voters repealed marriage equality in Maine, they’ll get a chance to make things right.
Officials in the state have confirmed that a November referendum will ask voters to decide whether or not marriage equality will be legal in Maine. Maine’s Secretary of State’s office verified more than 85,000 signatures collected by advocates seeking to reinstate marriage equality, a pretty big number considering only 55,000 signatures were required for referendum.
“Same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons other couples want to marry: because they love each other and want to spend their lives together,” Betsy Smith, Equality Maine’s executive director, said in a statement. ”During the last two years, our coalition has had thousands of face-to-face conversations about marriage with Mainers who have changed their minds about this issue. There’s no question that momentum is growing for same-sex marriage in Maine.”
Friends in Maine: please start hyping this up now. We need all the support we can possibly get to make sure marriage equality once again becomes a reality in yet another state.
